Born in South Korea, composer and ondist Imsu Choi studied at Ewha University (Seoul) where she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Composition. She continued her studies in France and joined the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris(CNSMDP) in écriture. Between 2014 and 2017, during her studies, she also joined Jean-Luc Hervé's composition class and Yan Maresz's electroacoustics class at the Conservatoire Boulogne-Billancourt. In 2018, she was admitted to the CNSMDP in Composition in the class of Frédéric Durieux, the class of Electroacoustics and New Technologies - professors Yan Maresz, Luis Naón and Grégoire Lorieux - and also that of Ondes Martenot in the class of Nathalie Forget.
Her pieces have been performed by several ensembles and orchestras, including the Orchestre de Picardie (Dir. Arie van Beek), Ensemble Intercontemporain (Dir. Léo Margue, Simon Proust), Ensemble Divertimento (Dir. Sandro Gorli, Dir. Viktoriia Vitrenko), Ensemble TM+ (Dir. Laurent Cuniot), Ensemble Meitar, Ensemble Imaginaire and soloists of Klangforum Wien for TongYeong International Music Festival in Korea. She participated in various master classes and received teachings from Unsuk Chin, Francesco Filidei, Dmitri Kourliandski, Allain Gaussin, Chaya Czernowin, Mauro Lanza, Martin Matalon and Georg Friedrich Haas.
As Ondiste, she introduced Ondes Martenot at Musée de la musique de Paris – Philharmonie de Paris during Nuit européenne des musées 2022. Also she played a creation for Ondes Martenot, Orgues et Percussions by Michel Foison at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris; at the Théâtre de Chaillot she performed La Fêtes des Belles Eaux, sextet d’ondes Martenot by Olivier Messiaen, with choreography by Japan’s Saburo Teshigawara. And, in concert, the same work by Messiaen during the Musikfestival Bern 2018 Nachtgezeiten. She also played with La Musique des Sapeurs Pompier de Paris for Maxime Aulio's Symphonie de l’espace at the Conservatoire de Puteaux under the direction of Mehdi Lougraïda.
In 2023 she was a solo ondist to play Les Trois petites Liturgies de la Présence Divine by Olivier Messiaen with the Orchestre du Conservatoire, conducted by Leo Warynski, at the Saint-Eustache church in Paris.
She has received scholarships from the Fondation de France (Prix Monique Gabus, Prix Marthe Depelsenaire), the Legs Edmond Jabès, the Mécénat Musical Société Générale and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Center. Imsu Choi taught electronic piano and Ondes Martenot at the Conservaoitre Evry-Courcouronnes from 2019 to 2023.
For the 2023-2024 season, she will participate in the IRCAM Cursus program.
